Phetogo | Season One Recap 2022

WGRUV Dance Company sought to honour the classics and modern styles ofContemporary, Ballet and Spanish Dance as they introduced the South Africanaudiences to PHETOGO for their debut 2022 season. They performed in theatresaround Johannesburg, Sasolburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town.

An exciting array of colourful dances, WGRUV Dance was excited to share a restaging of Jessica Lang’s, ‘Solo In 9 Parts’. This contemporary ballet in 3 movements celebrates life, dance and will lift your spirits as you enjoy Jessica’s brilliant choreography to music by Vivaldi.

PHETOGO also featured a new neo classical ballet that was created by KenYeatman, Holly Gruver and Lex Gruver called ‘Shades Of Blue’, which found themesof relationship, Balanchine style nuances and subtlety.

For PHETOGO, Carli Olivier and Holly Gruver combined forces to present a collaborative piece titled, ‘SAND’ which ignited a feel of a contemporary breath reaction to the swirling intensity of Spanish whip and whirl. ‘Unsquared’ by American choreographer, Tyler Gilstrap took us back to the 50’s with a playful Quartet into a Duet, which ushered in a new style of fall and recovery to Dave Brubeck and Bill Evans music. For PHETOGO, audiences enjoyed ‘Rhythms’ based off of Elderbrooks’ ‘Could’ as Contemporary Choreographer: Holly Gruver drew upon classical Graham style work, plus more.

A fine line and a soft curve. Elevation and control. Subtly with power. Truth in movement without fear or defeat. Connection, unity and togetherness. The beauty kept from the technique of the past combined with innovation and creativity of the now, and then hope toward that which will last. This brings us to WGRUV Dance Company.
